Sugar and SeminarsWorking with Dr. Rico Guevara, I studied hummingbird anatomy and physiology using CT scans as part of his Morphology Team. while I decided to not continue with this asynchronous role, it was illuminating to see the applications of hummingbird research to other fields via conceptual mechanisms like fluid dynamics and mass balance.

Connected SystemsIn Foundations in Physiology, I learned the conceptual tools that I would use for essentially all my later classes. Whether studying sensory neurophysiology or biochemistry, I learned how to apply the basic concepts of mass balance and flux to solve nearly any problem. I also adapted the study and comprehension tool of drawing a conceptual map connecting all information learned in a class to comprehend the larger scale relationships of any topic.

Research: Theory and PracticeFoundations in Quantitative Biology and Sensory Neurophysiology and Ecology Lab called on me to explore two entirely different paths of research. The first required that I focus on how to communicate data trends and interpret them at face value. In contrast, the latter focused solely on the methodology of research and how to formulate an experiment given existing literature. Synthesizing these two classes, I feel confident that I can explore papers as a physician with an understanding behind the logistical as well as data driven practices going into the research and its presentation. On the right you can see a probed cricket from the Lab on top and a paper I wrote for Foundations in Quantitative Biology below this.

Going Out of My Comfort ZoneAs a Biology Student, I wasn't sure what use I could get out of a Fine Arts class focused on Japanese Fiction. However, Okinawa in the Japanese Literary Imagination challenged this assumption. This class made me adapt a whole new set of tools to analyze information in a non-scientific way, breaking things apart into their constituent pieces before coming to my final conclusion. Additionally, it required a level of synthesis in writing I had never experienced before with a mesh of historical, literary, and visual sources. To the left are the final paper I wrote for this class as well as the cover of one of the stories used in the paper.
